

How We Got Here
Slap’s BBQ is a dream that started with the Squeal Like a Pig BBQ competition team, founded by brothers Mike and Joe Pearce in 2013. They were successful in competing on BBQ Pitmasters, and later opened Slap’s BBQ in June 2014.
They quickly found success, selling out each day due to their commitment to cooking fresh and putting out the best BBQ possible. Notably, Slap’s BBQ is one of the few restaurants in the city that actively competes on the KCBS circuit each season, with an average of 25-35 contests.

We’ve always taken pride in serving Kansas City barbecue the right way—fresh, consistent, and full of flavor. Behind the scenes, we’ve been working hard to make sure every product we ship meets the same standards we hold in our restaurant.
From the cut of meat to the balance of smoke and seasoning, nothing leaves our hands unless it’s something we’d be proud to serve across the counter in KC.
Now we’re making it easier to share that same experience wherever you are. Our sauces, rubs, and smoked meats are crafted with the same care that built our reputation at home. What started as two brothers on the competition circuit has grown into one of Kansas City’s most recognized barbecue names.

2013
Idea: Squeal Like a Pig
Brothers Joe & Mike Pearce form the Squeal Like a Pig competition team, laying the groundwork for Slap’s BBQ.

2014
Grand Opening
Slap’s BBQ opens at 553 Central Ave. The line hits the sidewalk and they sell out within hours—day after day.

2015
BBQ Pitmasters Show
Selected for BBQ Pitmasters, the team wins early rounds and ties for second in the finals, putting Slap’s on the national map.

2020
KCBS Team of the Year (Reserve)
A big season on the circuit: Reserve Grand Champion honors from the Kansas City Barbeque Society.

2021
Back-to-Back KCBS Honors
Slap’s BBQ repeats as Kansas City Barbeque Society Team of the Year Reserve Grand Champion.

2024
Best of KC Recognition
Slap’s takes home “Best Sausage” in The Pitch Best of KC awards, while also being named a finalist for Best Sauce.

Kansas City Magazine spotlights Slap’s as a competition stalwart setting the bar for KC barbecue.
